Have the planets aligned? Did your partner finally hear enough of your “hints”? Are you “taking a moment” and doing a little happy dance in private while trying to to decide what do first? If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these questions, it sounds like you are recently betrothed, and probably in need of our just engaged checklist. For some, the engagement is a complete and utter surprise, while others have been patiently waiting for what seems like the next ice age for their beau to descend onto one knee. Regardless, the time is here, you’re ENGAGED!!!! It’s time to live it up! Before you take that ring selfie and post that dazzling pic on social media, here’s your just engaged checklist for what you need to do first.

Keep it Personal

Even if only for a few hours, take some much needed time to revel in all the amazing thoughts and feelings floating around you. Break out those champagne glasses you’ve never used, snuggle up next to the fireplace, or even grab a romantic dinner, just you two. Make a little engagement bubble so to speak, and focus on just being in the moment with each other. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for!

Share the News

Once you’re ready to start letting the outside world in, it’s time to tell your parents first. If possible, see them face to face and let them join in on your excitement. If, for reasons of proximity, you’re unable to see your parents, a phone call is absolutely acceptable. This step is crucial- no parent wants social media to tell them about the joyous news before you. I know the excitement might be killing you, but you won’t regret telling your parents first. After your parents, who follows? Close friends and family, of course! Consider calling each person if they would be hurt finding out any other way. Put yourself in their shoes, how would you feel if the situation was reversed?

Go Social

Go ahead, post that engagement ring on Instagram, or any social media at this point. I know you’ve already uploaded 4 different versions with the perfect filters that highlight your sparkly new friend. #ISAIDYES

Insure Your Ring

It doesn’t matter if your newest addition to your collection is 5k or 50k. Insuring your man’s investment is incredibly important. Don’t assume that your current insurance policy will cover your engagement ring. Get your ring appraised by a certified gemologist. Unsure of where to go? Contact your jewelry store. Many homeowner’s or renter’s policies require an additional jewelry rider on top of your current policy. Once your sparkle is insured, you’ll be able to rest easy and really celebrate, I promise.

Be Polite

No sooner will you tell a friend you’re engaged, then they’ll hand over their mangled, trusted wedding planner with a small discussion on all the do’s and don’ts for your wedding. Be gracious. Say thank you.

Is grandma pressuring you to select a date because she’s cruising for the next 6 months? Have a response at the ready that allows you to still relax and not get anxious about the impending plans. Saying something as simple as “We’re just really focusing on our engagement right now, and enjoying every minute. We haven’t started making wedding plans yet, but when we do we’ll let you know.”

Throw a Party

(if you want, why not?)

Another great way to announce your engagement is to have a surprise party that celebrates the big news. If you’ve already told everybody and are just itching for a fun time then setting a party date just might be in order!

Set a Budget

Is your face stuck in your phone, “just looking” on Pinterest? Are you all a buzz with looking at photographer’s portfolios on Instagram?  That’s wonderful! There are a ton of decisions to make down the road, but do not waste your time searching for the perfect “ “ before you’ve spoken about the dreaded six letter word- budget. It’s only after this conversation that you two can start planning how many guests you can afford to host, and all the subsequent fun design-related details. The Knot has a wonderful article that helps break down some of the basics for navigating this area of just engaged planning. Consider this the continuation of our just engaged checklist. Have questions that you would rather chat with me about? Write me a note.
